Hawthorn bark eaten by porcupine

Unfortunately, my very favorite hawthorn tree has lost two thirds of its lower bark due to a porcupine attack. one of my thicker trunked spruces also had a small bit of bark eaten. Is there anything I can do to provide some sort of temporary artificial bark to keep it alive? Is this tree a goner maybe? At one point it is almost stripped all the way around, past the cambium and into a few seasons of growth. I don't know that it was super healthy to begin with, because it dropped its leaves about a month before the larger hawthorn bushes on my property did. It is growing many buds now though in preparation for spring though.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Si

Any ideas? I know it is not really a common issue, but is there anything I should do?

I would wrap sphagnum around the stem and fix that with some house hold foil to keep it moist.

You can, if you remove it to soon, the bark wiil not have time to recover. I kept it for approximate 6 months.
