Chineese sweet plum tree not growing red growth anymore. was created by Josh willz

Hi, I have had a Chinese sweet plum tree for a while now. As normal it was growing with red growth that matured green. As the autumn has set in the new growth is just green not red. The tree is otherwise healthy and growing strong enough to be pruned back ones a month and potted in a good soil mix in a South facing conservatory. It has been fertalised regularly as per the manufacturer instructions. No immediate issue with it im just curious as to why this red colour has gone from the new growth. Less light and cooler temperature? Does it not grow red growth all year around?

The red colour is a reaction to strong light. As authum arrives there are fewer sunhours and they are weaker. I would not be concerned about the colour of the new growth. However, I would be conserned if the tree is still in active growth now. Up here it is dormant season now. If you live in a warmer country the dormancy starts later. If the tree is still growing in December you may have a problem.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I wasn't thinking any major issue with it as its growing strong but just wanted the check it wasn't the start of a problem, thanks for clarity on that. Is the sweet plum not a evergreen? I'm in the uk so it's definitely not the warmest of the climates. But it is still growing very strongly and back budding even. Also what kind of problem would arrive if it does not have a dormant phase and how could I correct this? Thanks again for the reply.

Yes, the chinese sweet plum is evergreen. Evergreen does not mean that a tree is capable of growing all year round.
When your location gets less and less sunlight the tree needs to be kept colder. If not the tree will spend all its stored energy on trying to reach light. The result is weak elongated growth and in the long run it can run out of energy totally. I grow chinese sweet plum in Sweden and must admit that it is not easy and may not ever grow into an amazing tree. If you grow for good looking trees, locally hardy trees is allways the best. Growing non hardy species is another challenge. The one of keeping it alive.

I was under the impression that evergreens did grow all year. My other evergreen trees have stopped and lowers right down during winter but this one is showing no signs of slowing down.
With the conservatory they are in it is not heated so it is getting the cooler evenings and days. First year with a conservatory though so not sure how we'll it will work.

I guess you, just as me have evergreens growing naturally arround you in nature? None of them is growing year round?
If the temperature drops in the conservatory in winter, I am sure your tree will be ok. Just make sure it does not freeze in there.

Yeah there a quite a lot of evergreens. Mostly pines though. Probably not I just made the assumption that evergreens would grow year around.
Yeah I don't think it will freeze, might be close to it though maybe around 3°c should be alright I hope ahha

I keep my sweet plum in min 5c in winter. As said, not a total success. I think 10c and artificial light would be better. However with the energy costs coming up it is not realistic.

That's pretty low. I don't think it sould get much colder than that so I'm hopefully. Yeah it's not cheap to keep yourself warm let alone a bunch of trees in a conservatory. Think it's better to put them in the house and sacrifice good light for decent enough light and not need to heating to warm a conservatory up mid winter.

I do believe that 3 c in winter is better than 20c low humidity as living room conditions is.
