Hi, I just got this bonsai as a gift for my mom. It is a wintergem boxwood. I am trying to put in in her pot to surprise her with but I have no idea what I’m doing…
I have a mix of pumice/lava rock/akadama but the roots are pretty full and I can’t fit in the pot well. How do I distribute the soil?
Am I doing this right? I’m afraid I’m going to kill it lol… Tips appreciated!

Are you in the northern hemisphere? If so, now is not the right time for bare rooting, root pruning or repotting.
Beginners should grow their trees for at least one year before atempting any repotting and do so at the right time of the year. Preferably under the supervision of experienced bonsai artist.
With that beeing said. Normal repotting would include combing the roots into a radial pattern and cut the excess roots. In this case I would recomend just push as many roots into the pot as possible, even if they have to be circling the pot. Fill up with your soil and work it in with a stick. Keep the tree outdoors in shade for the rest of the season and keep it moist at all times.
Good luck.

Oh so should I just put it back in original potting soil? It doesn’t look like the rock soil mix so I thought it was supposed to repot it for a more permanent mix.
Also it is end of summer/beginning of fall season, not time to repot?
