Newbie inherited bonsai, needs some help was created by kfleis

As long as I can recall, my grandparents had this tree in their house. Then when they passed, they gave it to my mom to take care of. Recently, she said it keeps dropping leaves and passed it on to me to take care of instead. I don't really know what I'm doing. I've read some documentation, identified that I believe this is a Ficus, and it's definitely never been repotted. I'm in zone 6b so I'll have to wait until next spring to do any repotting. BUT, this is all background to say, I don't know what to do with this to make it happier. It definitely looks like it may benefit from some pruning since it has grown so wonkily but I don't know what the best starting point would be. Do I need to go back to step one and put it back in a big pot and prune back from there? Also, I can't figure out how to water it, when I put water in, it runs right back out so that tells me its probably pretty root-bound. Help me not disappoint my deceased grandparents!!!
Lol oh great when taking these pictures I just noticed mealybugs so I'll take care of that to start

It sounds and looks like it needs repotting with all new soil.
I would not be suprised if it is pot bound and all the roots are in a big ball.
Im also guessing it will need an emergancy root prune.

There is some kind of pest which is highlighted by the wooly white stuff, which im guessing is Woolly Aphids.

It needs some work for sure but its not too late yet.
Getting rid of the pests first is the most important thing... no point repotting if it gets contaminated again.

To me the plant looks like a Ficus ginseng.. I would try doing some research more into the care of the Ficus ginseng specifically.
This should include info on

1. Watering (Too much / Too little)
2. Temperature (keep away from any radiators in the house for example)
3. Location (sun or shade)
4. Feeding (type of feed and when to feed)
5. Pruning (Types of pruning to encourage more or less growth, ramification)
6. Root Pruning
7. Styles and Styling (Final shaping of the tree)
8. Pests
9. Basic Like and Dislikes (example, drafts and wind conditions)

The more you know the more you can help the little fella :)
Knowledge is power as they say.

Has the tree been indoors in a room with AC during a heat wave?

Do not prune an unhealthy tree. Health is allways prio one and pruning is for aestetics not health.

Ficus do best outdoors during summer.
