Rosemary bonsai from shrub?

I rescued a rosemary shrub from a neighbours landscaping project, I planted the bulk of it outdoors and took some cuttings and put them in some propitiation trays but the shrub had a couple of separate trunks and I separated this one as I thought this might make an interesting cascading bonsai, there are good roots in the trunk but it is far too long. Have replanted it in a regular pot and given it a bit of a trim, - try and save as much of it as I can - haven’t wired this bit or anything yet coz I didn’t want to stress it too much.
If there any way to reduce the length of the trunk while keeping the plant alive? I don’t have much experience other than a couple of garden centre bought bonsai and experimenting with some seed kits (so far one cypress seedling from about 40 useless seeds) so any advice would be welcome. I’ve watched some YouTube videos but seemed like this wouldn’t really reroot from hardwood if I just cut the bottom half of the trunk off and no idea about grafting or air layers or if that’s even the right thing to do.

This is not the season for working on trees. Just let it recover from the stress caused digging it out in the middle of the summer. If it bounces back in vigourous growth this season you can start work on it in late winter or early spring. If not wait until same part of the year 2024.
Your picture seems to have many options for new leader. It should also be possible to create a lower tree by wiring and mowement. But you have quite some time awailable to set a plan for the tree.

Thank you! Yes it looks like plenty of options which is why I tried to save it. It’s in a pot now so will leave it alone and try not to fiddle with it!
Just starting my bonsai hobby and working on being more patient and that the trees won’t magically grow overnight no matter how many light I point at them!

It can be? My only outdoor space is a north facing balcony/roof and half the advice I see is things should be south facing so I left it in a south facing window in a warmer room for now? Better outside despite north facing?
Edit: the place I got the idea for rosemary in the first place grew his from a cutting indoors so apologies for my ignorance but half the reason I chose it was coz I thought I could keep it indoors.

For now, shade is good. It has recently been root pruned in the middle of the summer. Too much sun will kill It. Once recovered you have other things to worry about. Like how do you prepare winter dormancy?
Honestly. If all the outdoor space you have awailable maybe bonsai is not the right hobby for you. At least not now.

rosemary is a plant species that is tricky with the roots. Repotting and digging is typically done in early summer, so you are right on the mark there. For now, make sure it roots again. Next year you can start thinking trunk reductions. If healthy and in a sunny spot you can get rosemary to backbud but unpredictable

Thanks! I have moved it outside and keeping a check on watering, seems to be staying green in the leaves so hoping it survives. Could be quite an interesting tree if I can keep it going!!
