Hey y'all! I'm very new to bonsai's/plants in general. As i had just moved into an apt. by myself, i decided to try and grow some stuff from seeds and that's going pretty well, and have had probably 10-12 sprout now.
However my mother found a bonsai and knew i was interested, so she found the attached photo for 20-25$ she said.
She said it was a ficus, but i guess there's different kinds so not sure on which kind it is, maybe someone can help there? (if it matters in terms of caring for it)
The only instructions they gave her were:
- to water it with 5 ice cubes once per week
- to not put it in direct sunlight.
- and that it probably needs to be repotted in 3 months.
However a quick google search show's the first 2 to be completely incorrect? lol
So i would absolutely love any advice on this and how to care for it properly!
i'm in Texas, so zone 9a. I have a balcony i can place it on if needed, as well as some shelves in the window that can get some direct sunlight that way.
Thanks in advance for any response!

This is a ficus microcarpa ginseng. One small leaf ficus grafted on the roots of a fast growing big leaf ficus. Very efficient way to produce trees fast and sell by milions. By most bonsai artists don't concidered bonsai.
Keep it outdoors as long as temperature is above 10 degrees.

I am sure Tropfrog is talking about degrees Celsius. And you being in zone 9A surely can put it outside all year round.
Water it when the soil feels drying.
Let it get morning sun, they love it.

Dont let it stop you. Every tree can be turned into bonsai. There are a few people that actually have been able to make ginseng a thrustworthy bonsai by carving the root base. Spend your time and effort for now to keep it healthy. Meanwhile sheck up on Nigel Saunders wood working tecnique for ginseng ficus.

Gotcha, will definitely look that guy up and read into that! appreciate the tips.
Do you think Id be better off repotting it now/soon? Or let it just grow and make sure it's healthy before i start messing with all that.
It was in a plastic pot, inside of a ceramic. I took it out of the ceramic. and just have the plastic one out atm. The plastic does have drain holes in it.
