Hi!

I'm fairly new to gardening and recently bought a bonsai seed kit from a local walgreens (I know, the worst possible thing I could do).
So far, so good. Within 3 days of having the seeds under a grow light indoors (with low indirect natural lighting), one of my seeds germinated and has been growing fast! So fast, that I think it pushed itself out of the soil. This is the weirdest thing I've seen a plant do - including the plants I've germinated, sprouted, and subsequently failed to manage. Is this normal? Do they usually root first then come back up? Do they usually somersault in the air???? Should I be concerned that the seed is no longer covered by moist soil, and continue to keep my baggie over it, or start introducing house air to it?

I think its important to include that this is one of five seeds, idk how the others are doing (probably feeding the current one?). The growth medium is a pretty basic soil, I dont see any added nutrients or fertilizer granules in it. Internal climate is usually a good balance of dry and humid (I live in a very humid part of the US), with my fan on high and the A/C set to 72-75F. Low indirect summer sunlight (sunrise at 6:30, sunset at 8:00ish) and high direct lighting from the full-spectrum grow light for 8h a day. It's remained in a ziploc bag, other than when I check on it, and I've only had to mist it once. I've grown it for maybe a week and a half tops.

Any tips help!!

It is not the seed that is in the air, it is just the seed capsule. That is totally normal. Happens to many trees but also many other plants. Sunflowers, cucumbers and beans beeing amongst the plants that do it most often.

What you have is not bonsai seeds and what has sprouted is not a bonsai sapling. You have normal tree seeds and normal tree saplings. It will not grow into a bonsai without decades of devotion and using many different tecniqes in the right time of the year.

Trees sprout naturally in spring. If you are in the northern hemisphere it is now to late to start and in the southern it is to early.

Thank you so much for your reply, I was worried it would hurt it in some way! Is what you're saying that the cultivation techniques are what makes it a bonsai? Im still very new and learning :) any suggestions to educational and cultural readings would be appreciated too!

Yes, bonsai is about designing normal trees. The best to start with is somewhat mature trees from your local garden center. Grown from seeds takes 5-10 years before any real bonsai work is carried out.

There are a lot of info here at bonsai empire. Some is for free and some needs a subscription.

Hello, and welcome to the forum (and indeed the hobby)
Growing bonsai from seed takes a long time and is a true test of patience. There is indeed a wealth of knowledge on here, but for a beginner I would recommend learning from a more "visual" source. Check out reputable YouTube channels from established creators - Herons bonsai is particularly absorbing, likewise Kaizen bonsai. Check out ebay for cheap bonsai that you can "cut your teeth" on and practice wiring and pruning.
Good luck!
