I received this beauty as a gift. What variety of Ficus is it...l have had it 1 month. It is in plastic cup and outside blue ceramic pot. Have no idea how to care for it. I live in Florida. Does it need pruning?

If you want to train it as bonsai you will need to trim it frequently. But as first tree I would recomend to learn how to keep it alive first.

Hello Vikki, and welcome to the forum from a fellow new(ish) member.
I'm not sure exactly what species your tree is, but you are obviously doing something right in your tending of it - lots of lovely new growth there, well done. I'm guessing that these are early days for you as a bonsai caretaker? Keep it adequately watered, plenty of sunlight, and feed it every do often. I'm not going to type you out an exhaustive bonsai care sheet - there is a wealth of info on t'internet and in your local library. I recommend subscribing to Herons 名媛直播 YouTube channel - there is a wealth of information there for the asking. Also - maybe see if there is a bonsai club near you.
Good luck!

Oh thank you. I was thinking the leaves at the bottom of the trunk should be cut. I watched some videos where that was done but not sure. I will definitely try your suggestions...very grateful.

Hmm. Looking closer on the picture I think I see that three tipped leafs that suggests fukien tea tree. But not on all of them. Not sure I have seen it on any ficus.
But, please Google for carmona bonsai and see if my wild guess fits your tree.
And, yes. Sprouts low on the tree often needs to be taken off design wise. But in this stage of your bonsai Journey the focus should be on tree health not design. Any corrections can be done next growing season if you succeed on keeping it healthy until then. All foliage left on the tree contributes to its health.

I will look for the variety you suspect. My concern for now is the inside container is black plastic sitting inside the blue ceramic bowl..both have drain. holes. I feel like taking the plant out of the blue one would allow for more air etc. But not sure.

Air is introduced to the roots when watering correctly. If the drainage holes is big enough you should be fine.
