Hi bonsai-ers,
I was so fortunate to get a comment from Tropfrog that pointed me in the direction of root pruning. Lo and behold, my first root ball stared at me all twisted and gnarled. I pruned just half to be safe. One side of the root has thickened up so much more than the other side, presumably d/t it being the sun-facing side?!
Nevertheless, there are TWO fat, twisted root portions that I don't know what to do with:
1) Is it really okay to prune the bottom piece since it looks to be the original taproot (?) ->pic 1
2) Would you say I've pruned just enough, too much, or could go more? ->pic 2
3) Also, is the imbalanced root growth a common problem? Do growers rotate the plant every few months to get more even growth around the plant?
4) As for the ficus, I feel that the 'nebari' is beautiful as much it is thicker than the trunk-- would the majority overwhelmingly disagree??
Thank you!!

1 yes its advicable to cut the tap root.
2: pruning roots should be based on design decitions. Sometimes one needs to take a few, Sometimes more. I think I would take the taproot also and leave it there.
3: inbalanced root growth is the way most trees grow naturally. Root pruning is the method to balannce it. Rotating the tree will not help.
4: I dont like to have roots thicker than the trunk, cannot grow balanced easily. In this case much roots has allready been removed so I would consider removing it next time doing root work.
