Hi. I have a large sycamore tree near my garden & every year new seeds self sow. I usually pull them up but last year I collected 3 of them & put them into a 6" plant pot using ordinary soil from the garden. They grew & this year they are growing again. I'm interested in trying to cultivate them into bonsai but don't really know where to start. Any comments & guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey.
Sycamore have big leaves right? So to make it proportional it should be a big tree, for this fact, is not an easy species to start with, there is a lot of small leafed species out there, but good luck with yours.

I found several sycamores volunteering in some of my pots a couple of years ago and decided to try to work them into the crowd of trees.
The leaves won't shrink down and the trunks won't thicken. They only want to grow up tall and skinny. I won't try any more.

the sycamore maple works well in bonsai, the leaves are not too badly reduced, we can do 2 defoliations per year, I have selui, it is a spontaneous sowing in a flower bed, it is 25 cm high and a good cm thick, I'm two others but big ones

Thank you for your response. Your tree looks like something I was hoping to achieve so can you tell me what I need to do please?
I'm attaching a picture of my 3 trees. The tallest one is about 40 cm high & the shortest about about 20cm.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

These plants need to be grown in the ground for a few years as the trunks are too thin. The leaves will be huge for a while, and are difficult to reduce, it takes years to reduce to a better size. But they are something to play with and learn how to grow and prune etc. It will be 15 to 20 years to make an acceptable bonsai from any of these.

For some reason or reasons outside in the ground in the sun works better than in a pot. I have sweet gums and elms in the yard that are about 4 years old with trunks over a inch in diameter maybe 3-4 cm. Maples dug up get about half that size. I don't understand why a big pot with decent soil is not better than in the ground with a thin layer of soil over clay, but the trees grow bigger and faster.
I do know that the more sun the better.
