Just wondering if anyone can help. Have been away from home for a while, so my Chinese elm hasn't been pruned. recently repotted and just wanted to know the best course of approach for helping my bonsai get back to its original shape. would you recommend cutting all the ill-formed branches off or will that negatively effect the tree. any help would be appreciated.

During the growth season let it grow wild 10-20 cm, then cut back to the first 2 or three leafs paying attention to the direction of the last leaf. That is where next branch will grow. This pruning may be needed to do 3-4 times in a growing season if the tree is healthy.
In the end of the dormant season, just when you see the very first buds in spring is the window to make mayor pruning. Then you can correct all branches no matter how old they are. If you are to do cuts on very old wood, use a tree wound sealer on it after.
