Difficult 5-8 year old Juniper material was created by Jason Juniper

Hi All,

Juniper (furthest on the right). Need some inspiration as I find the look to be very boring. If this was your tree what would you do to it? Cut the trunk down to gain movement is my first idea but it is very drastic and I'm looking to see if any one has a more immediate, aestheticaly appealing solution?

Many thanks,

Jason

There is wire that seems to be around the trunk, not good. There also looks like a dead or nearly dead branch. Possibly this could be jinned, It is extremely difficult to see all the branches and where they are from this picture. Maybe it could be tilted slightly.

Thank you for your reply. I'll take a better picture later today and upload it. I don't know if anyone is interested in drawing up a basic design sketch for me to implement onto the Tree. I've grown a little attached to the tree and I think it'd be ashame for me to alter the design in poor taste (me being a beginner). I have good experience with wiring, basic care and root managments/soil mediums if this helps. Thanks all.

Please ignore the wire, I'm in the process of taking it off and have just been a little busy :)

nice juniper, I'd consider thinning out the needles closer to the trunk, and I'd keep the dead branch for now just to see what happens. no rush. Besides that, maybe just find a good orientation and re-pot it in a proper bonsai pot?

Lets analyse your possibilities:

Create movement in the trunk: Not possuble, too mature to bend.

Branch selection: Not an option. The tree already have few branches and backbudding is not very strong on junipers.

Branch movement: there are still branches that can be wired for movement. However, straight trunk and moving branches looks odd. The only thing you can do is correct earlier misstakes in creating a bow of the branches. Mature trees have branches coming out close to 90 degree from the trunk. Bends down from there by the weight of the foliage and going up towards the sun in the end. However, right now the wire must go. If you havent allready lost the first branch you are close to doing it. Remove it urgently and carefully and dont wire again until its healthy again.

Pot it in another angle: still possible but not now, the tree needs to recover. In the long run I would till it slightly to the left based on the first picture.

Developing ramification and pads: This is really the stage you are in right now. I would go in and thin everything except for first branch. In my opinion a tree like this needs foliage closer to the trunk. So hope for at least some backbudding.

Another pot: Yes, in the long run, but I dont think it is healthy enough now.

All and all. This tree has way passed the styling stage, now it is all about developing the style allreasy created. If you are not happy with the tree style, get another material.

Edit: looking at all the photos, it is not the first branch you are loosing, its the third.

-Thank you all who replied. This is great advice you have all given and I'll take my time to nurture it in this way as time goes on. Hopefully, I can give the tree a new lease of life.
I know it won't ever be a prize-winning tree but I feel as though I owe it to the Juniper, to make good on my promise of a vision of beauty.
I am 24 years old and have recently been diagnosed with ADD, this means I can sometimes make impulsive decisions and I did not want the tree to be subject to that, so I found this forum online and thought I'd make this post.

-Getting into the 名媛直播 Hobby, I have watched people in this community work diligently to create such feats of natural beauty. Through my learning, the realisation that these trees exist on a completely different time scale to us humans brought to my attention just how selfless 名媛直播 is - I could care for, and develop this tree my whole life and still I would never see the full extent of its beauty. How I'd love to see the tree in my vision 100 years from now. I guess, in the same way, we would like to see what our children become but are denied that pleasure by our passing. To create a 名媛直播, at least for me, Is to dedicate time to an endeavour greater than myself. And in doing so, I am more aware of the passage of time. "My life is but a drop of water to the ocean, suspended in life, brought to source in death. We make an impact, with ripples proceed our grasp." - Jason.

Many thanks,

Jason
