Hi guys. I'm James and live in Auckland New Zealand. I have aa 14 year old NZ native Pohutukawa bonsai tree. Recently I pruned about 1/3 of the tree as I wanted it to become more bushy and there were new shoots appearing on some branches as well. However after 3 weeks now, all the new buds have died and the remaining leaves are shriveling up and overall the tree does not look good. It has just become Autumn here but is still in the early to mid 20 degrees celsius.
I have attached a pic for reference so am asking for any advice to see what I can do, or shall I just hope that it comes back to life next spring?
I am worried that I have ruined the tree and any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I don't know this species, but it looks as if the branches you cut are the ones that have lost the leaves. I don't like what you have on the surface as it must be difficult to water and know if it needs water. Were are you keeping it? Is it a tropical species that should not lose leaves? I would remove the grit and watch the watering, don't re pot or add fertiliser until it has recovered.

Hi, thanks for that. No it is not tropical and does not usually loose it leaves. The small stones were in this when I purchased it 3.5 years ago. The branches with no leaves are the ones I cut back and they had small buds on them, that have now died. I water the plant thoroughly every few days. It lives on a deck in full sun. It has been growing new leaves fine up until I pruned the plant, hence why I think the pruning has done something to the plant. I am not sure what else I can do other than see what happens?
