Hi!
I'm very new to the bonsai world, and don't know much about planting anything. But I have this 2.5 old Jacaranda plant I want to bonsai. I planted 5 little seeds in a small burlap sac and all 5 sprouted and are growing. They're on their 5th pair of leaves. I water it until the roots get wet (I make sure there is proper drainage to prevent waterlogging) once a week. I live in the Pacific Northwest so it is about Spring time here so I leave it next to my window so it gets sunlight. Recently, I noticed the cotyledons started browning on the edges. I have a few questions:
1) Could this be from underwatering or too much sunlight?
2) Should I change up anything I'm doing?
3) Is overcrowding an issue? When should I repot and how?
Thank you all!

Hello.
Cotyledons are temporary, they will always drop eventually, so, nothing wrong.
As you're entering the spring right now, yes, you can separate them already, prune the taproot shorter, and maybe start to move them outside, if not too cold.
As they are young now, they might thick another root that will become like a taproot, but it's ok to prune it again on the next repot (for a bigger pot once it's established)

Thank you for the reply. I just want to make sure I understand everything correctly.
" yes, you can separate them already" - This means to take it out of the sac, and use chopsticks to gently pull away the soil, and gently pull out each seedlings root. Then place each seedling in its own pot? Should I look up specific soil to use for Jacaranda? Or will any soil do?
"prune the taproot shorter" - Google tells me the taproot its the bottom part of the root. Below the root stems. You're saying to cut those off? Is that what pruning means? I assume if they aren't there to leave as is.
Thank you!

Hey!
Sorry the time took me to answer...
Yes, put them on individual pots, I use mostly organic potting soil with a bit of rough sand (about 1/3).
About cutting the taproot...
Taproot is the main root that go straight down, it gives the trees stability on the ground, however as the tree will be raised on pots, it doesn't need a taproot, plus, by prunning the taproot shorter you estimulate side roots, that will later form a better base for your tree... If you don't feel that confident you can do it on some of your seedlings. But I did that on mine when they were about that size, and all of them reacted nicely...
In my opinion that's a technique you MUST learn when doing 名媛直播 from seeds.

No worries. Thanks for the reply.
Here's an update. I went to my local garden shop and the guy recommended that I use inorganic soil + fertilizer.
So yesterday I separated them into their own pots. Gave them water, then fed them with the fertilizer.
The next morning the cotyledons browned, wilted, and shrunk. And some of the true leaves look like they're wilting.

I'm using Espoma Organic 名媛直播 mix.
Says Formulated from 50-60% Calcined Clay, Expanded Shale & Aged Forest Products
I'm using this fertilizer: Alaska Fish Fertilizer for Plants. 5-1-1
This is what the guy at the gardening center says he uses for his 名媛直播.

Ok, there are some points here:
1. This is not a 名媛直播 yet, just a seedling, so there's no need to use bonsai mix.
Jacaranda would do better with a general organic potting soil with a bit of rough sand, than with a mix with those high rates of innorganic, at least at this point.
2. No need for 名媛直播 pots, you can use normal pots, even because eventually you'll have to put on bigger and bigger pots, otherwise this jacaranda will never grow anything but a slender stem.
Even because that species tend to be leggy.
3. I never straight fertelize a just repoted tree, even because this small tree doesn't even need extra fertilizing, nutrients on the soil should be enough.
Fortunatelly I don't think this fertilizer will kill it.
4. If you're getting into the spring, and temperatures are getting warmer, this should go outside if you can.
5. Now that is already done, just let it be for now, don't try to repot again, repoting is always stressfull, but they should react soon...
Oh!
6. And more important, don't let that bum you, that's how we learn.

Fortunatelly I don't think this fertilizer will kill it. -- I literally did this. I repotted them, watered them, then fed them the liquid fertilizer.
The espoma soil is inorganic soil for organic plants, but it doesn't seem to have any nutrients by itself. Should I continue watering then fertilizing once a week?
Honestly I think they're dying. The cotyledons have browned and wilted. And one or two of the bottom leaf pairs are starting to wilt on a couple of plants. I am a little bummed, but it is part of the learning process. This is my first time planting literally anything in my life, and I'm happy and surprised it made it this far.
