My beloved Chinese privet is dying. What have I done wrong? was created by thedoberman

Hi guys. I recently went on holiday and when I returned my pretty lush chinese privet's leaves had mostly curled up and a lot of them had dropped off. It had been quite sunny while I was away and it lives on a south-facing windowsill. I havent fertilised it in months so that could also be the issue. But I'm primarily concerned about root rot. I have had this for a year and not repotted it yet. There has been some new grown since I returned, weirdly, so there is hope. Attached are pics. I really love this tree and would be mortified if I killed it. Any help would be hugely appreciated. As I said this came out of nowhere and was really sudden.

Probably about 10 days. I usually let it dry out completely before watering so 10 days it not out of the ordinary.

Tought the same.
Soak the soil, and remove all dried up leaves. And hope for the best.

I did that when I returned - maybe that's why the new growth has come in? Thanks for your help, by the way

Privets are tougher than $2 steaks. Looks like it dried out. If it is shooting new growth it should live, though you may have some die back on branches. Beware if you are on vacation, maybe move it to less light next time to reduce the risk of drying out. You could also apply a plastic bag over the top with a few air holes cut into it, or some other form of temporary greenhouse. Just be careful not to burn it with direct light/heat. Looks to me like she is alive though.

Great to hear thanks! A few days on and it appears to be growing back. Have fertilised it too so hopefully that reaps rewards. Thanks again

Cut the fertilizer until it has gained health.

In the future try to refrain from using fertilizer on a tree until it is fully recovered.
