I am completely new to the bonsai world and was hoping for some tips and guidance to help me grow my bonsai. I started the process in December 2020 so it’s a little over a year in the making, as far as I can tell it’s healthy but I have no idea of a species or anything like that. I water it as and when the soil becomes dry. Is there a good time to repot?

Do you know what species it is?
Is it grown from seed or cutting?
Is it kept indoors or outdoors?

Hello, the straight trunk with no ramification and the shape of the buds make me think of a young Ginkgo Biloba, though I cannot be 100% sure.
If it is, it has to be moved outside.

I have no knowledge of bonsais really, so have no idea what species it is. It is grown from a seed and is kept indoors on the window sill so gets a lot of light throughout the day

You dont need any bonsai knowledge at this point. Just some basic horticultural knowledge.
Decidious trees that shed leafs in winter despite kept indoors is a sign of stress. However as we dont know species it is impossible to make any recomendations. Do you have picture on the tree in leaf?

Looking at the buds I'm quitte sure it's not a gingko. It will be easier to see once the leaves are open.

Yes I do. I’ll attach it, some of the leaves started going a little yellow and soon fell off. The rest followed but the “trunk” has remained sturdy

Yes, definitely not a gingko, sorry, I was misled... I agree it might well be a birch
