Should I lop to stunt growth? was created by ZJohn57

Hello,

I have a 3 year old Japanese 名媛直播 Tree that is continuing to grow vertically and not horizontally. I’d like to get more width however it just grows up.

I am curious if I should cut it in half or closer to the base to put growth out and not up.

Thanks!

I am sorry to say.....This is not a japanese tree and not a bonsai.

Not familiar with the species, so cant help on best approach. But I am quite sure that a summer outdoors will help development to a future bonsai if that is your goal.

And Jacaranda is not japanese:)

Lucr: do you have experience with the species? Does it backbud well? Is it possible to cut down to appropriate hight and still survive and backbud.

Another option is to make some really big bends and mowement on it, but I dont know how brittle the wood is. If not something like this could be fun:

They are way much better to train if you plant it on the ground.
The species is leggy by nature, but on the ground it's the best way to get a thick trunk before chopping it in order to ramify.

Its dangerous to recomend growing such heat growing species in the ground. Most of us dont live where it will survive outdoors in winter.
