Beginner. Planted 5 red maple seeds. All sprouted. When to repot? was created by chronicspore

Hi Everyone!

I am a super beginner. I have never grown anything, and this is my first time trying to grow my own 名媛直播 from seed.
I got a starter kit which came with a small burlap sack, soil, and seeds. I planted 5 red maple seeds in the sac (as per instructions) and after ~3 weeks all 5 sprouted. I'm worried that too many are growing in too small of an area. What and when (if anything) should I do? The only thing I've been doing is using my small misting bottle to water it everyday. Making sure the top of the soil is wet. I'm also worried that maybe doing this is causing not enough water to get to the bottom of the roots?

Thanks for all the help!

Its in the middle of winter now if you are in the northern hemisphere. Seeds dont naturally germinate in winter. Your biggest issue is to make them thru winter without getting elongated and weak. Try to keep temperature down and if possible add a little extra light. Growing temperate species from seed out of season is quite a challenge in itself.

I am not sure about best time to separate them when growing out of season. But they will need an estabished root system and be in perfect health before doing it. As soon as trees around you go into leaf put them outside. If they get to crowded, I think it is better to sacrifice a few by snipping them off by the soil level than risk to loose all by separating too soon.

Please show a picture. Right now it is impossible to tell how close they are. In general, they can be quite close initially without any issues.

The biggest issues are the fact that is winter, as mentioned above, and your watering technique.

Keeping the topsoil wet is BAD (!)
Roots thrive in a situation where there is sufficient air and humidity. To get this environment, the soil needs to get slightly dry before watering again. And when you water, the whole pot needs water. Depending on where your seedlings stand, there could easily be a week between 2 waterings.

As said, please show a picture.

hm.. Where did you get these seeds? They do not look like maple seedlings to me. I have never seen maple seedlings with these types of cotyledons. I have seen this shape before, but am not sure where. I think it was some tropicals I grew in the past.

Misting takes way too long to water properly. Assuming they are indoors and assuming northern hemisphere, put the in the kitchen sink and sprinkle water until water pours out of the bottom of the pot. Once it is reliably above freezing outdoors, put them out in the sun and leave them there.

While they would have done better further apart, I would not repot until next year. In the meantime, lots of sun, water just before they are dry, a little fertilizer, and let them grow. Read up on care in Techniques on the Empire website.

I agree with Leatherback. I don't think these are maples, but I don't know what they are.

Those are Jacaranda... I'm 100% sure.

You can wait until they have like 4 pair of leaves...

Just have in mind that they have compound leaves (Bi pinnately)

Jacaranda, agreed! After checking some pics, that is what I once grew. And did what was recommended above: put them outside and left them there. They died once frost arrived. Do not keep them outside if it gets cold.

I got them from a starter kit on Amazon. They came with 5 different sets of seeds, so it is possible I could have mislabeled.
Albas said they are 100% that it is a Jacaranda, which is one of the seeds that I got.

I'm in the Pacific NW, so its pretty cold outside now. My house is constantly between 65 deg F and 71 deg F. So I'll keep them inside near a window for sunlight until it warms up outside.
