Hello everyone! I was recently gifted a couple of ginseng ficus bonsai, but I have no experience with plants and would really appreciate some help. I'm based in the UK if that helps knowing more about the climate. I've also kept them near a South-East facing window.
I was given a big bonsai, which so far seems to be surviving, but I was also given a baby bonsai/pre-bonsai which already has leaves withering.
I've done some research and think it may just be that I under-watered it, so I've misted it and watered it twice today (not too much water each time, as I don't want to drown it).
The main problem is I don't know how/when to pot the small one. I've read that you don't repot them until early Spring, but it's currently in a carboard pot that will soon disintegrate, so I assume the Spring rule doesn't apply here? Shall I try and find a ceramic pot that's a 1/3 the height of the bonsai plant?
Any and all help would be appreciated, thank you!

seen the photo, the poor thing is very thirsty, it is urgent to repot it in a more appropriate pot, for watering, it is several times a week and plentiful!! for the other, June is the most appropriate period

THis is where you can toss all rules out of the window. The little pot it is in seems to hold nothing but the roots and some coco coir.
Were this mine I would:
- Get good quality potting soil based on cocos fibres as this is form-stable water retentive yet does not form a dense muck to easily
- Get a pot in which the current pot would fit snugly
- Put a bit of soil in the new pot.
- GENTLY slide the old pot from the roots, put is on top of the new soil
- Backfill the new pot with new soil, tapping the OUTSIDE of the pot to get the soil to go down (You do not want to compress it)
- Water thouroughly, and fill the pot again
- Take a transparant back, and enclose the pot with plant fully in it.
- Put it in a bright spot, ideally on a warm -not hot- surface
- Once a day, open the bag for half an hour to reduce risk of gungal
I am NOT convinced this tree will live. I think it is too far gone already.

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions, I've bought some soil and a new pot today, so fingers crossed I can revive it!
