I’ve had these seedlings for almost a year. They started off fast and strong and just suddenly stopped growing and lost their leaves. Only one has two leaves left which are brown now and the other is just the stem. Soil is just akadama and lava rock. Water every day and fertilize about every two weeks with liquid fertilizer. Haven’t seen any harm but also haven’t seen any improvement at all. They been in this condition for a few months now so I know it’s not that they went dormant.

OK, you say it is not because they are dormant. How do you reach that conclusion? Because if you in northern hemisphere and in a temperate climate, that would be the most logical explanation. The other first option would be that through over fertilizing and/or lack of water they died.

My deciduous trees lost their leafs and went dormant a few months ago as well. Whats your location?
No matter if they are dormant or dieing you should not fertilize at all.
In winter, watering every day is far too much. I water once a month or less this time of the year.

Never water on a schedule, water when the bonsai soil is damp, make sure the soil never dry out. Water thoroughly with a watering can or hose for 30 seconds. Don't worry, when I got my 1st bonsai I made the same mistake with watering.
