Is watering frozen plants bad idea? was created by Si Guy

I had a question for an experienced bonsai grower, I have just watered my outside trees, but the temperature is below freezing. Will this be bad for the plants? If so, should I take the plants inside so they don't freeze? Or leave them out and hope they don't get hurt?

No reason to water frozen substrate. Plants cannot drink ice.

Please dont bring your trees indoors.

If you have temperatures going between frost for a few days and then warmer, it is good to ensure your plants are watered. During frost the tree can dry out quite a bit and all of the sudden you find the substrate dry when it thaws, with the plant restoring water.

Watering and then getting frost is similar to getting rain on your plants and then frost, which is effectively what my winters look like. I let nature do its thing.
Biggest risk is the pot breaking from the expanding water. Roots can get damaged from the pressure of ice, although I personally have not had any problems.
