Hi All,

I am new here, Ive read and learnt alot before actually registering.

I am in South Africa Firstly for an indication of seasons:
Autumn/Fall – 1 March – 31 May.
Winter – 1 June – 31 August.
Spring – 1 September – 30 November.
Summer – 1 December – 28/29 February.

Last year March 2021, I decided to try and not kill a tree for the 5th or 6th time. I've always only tried with Juniper, as from research they are pretty hardy trees.
I bought nursery stock, and watched tons of videos on finding the front, wiring, watering etc.

My wiring is not where I want it to be but nevertheless. I managed to somewhat get a Juniper in training, and wired to how I imagined it. I left it, did some pinching, and watered as needed. I managed to leave it alone for over a year, and just gave it attention as needed. I feel like it's time to give it more attention, but not sure where to go from here. I'm just impressed that it's still alive, so very sceptical to do anything drastic.

I can see that the Wire is starting to squeeze the branches, and forming indentations, is this an indication taht its time to remove wire? and if so, should it be re-wired to keep its form?
I also read that if you want the trunk and Nebari to flare out nicely, its a good idea to keep a lower branch as a sacrificial branch that will help with this, to be cut off at a later stage. Is this true, I have done this, I'm not sure if anything additional like cutting back or anything of that nature also need to be done on the branch to help with trunk thickening.
When is the best time to re-pot, and how do you make the decision or know that it now needs to be potted into a bonsai pot?

Any tips or suggetsions on the way forward would be gretaly appreciated.

I attached some pictures, the one picture I highlighted the lower branch that was kept.

congrats on not killing this one!

Keep the low branch, and just let it grow. Do not trim.

The wire can stay on untill it the branch has grown up to the widest point. At that time you can gently unwire the tree. It takes a bit of practice, as the wire should only move away from the branch, and not twist, else the bark will come off.
