I started growing a few different bonsai at the start of the year and only 1 has survived. That's not the issue, the issue is I don't know if it's growing properly.

I lost the tag I had for it but I'm sure its a black pine. I started from seed middle of January (live in Scotland) and it's leaves have went long and the bottom few are brownish. Not sure if this is normal as this is my first attempt and would like to grow more. The bonsai has been in this pot for 5months and is potted with bonsai/cactus soil. It also gets a dampening every 2nd day

Your pine looks healthy. It is normal that the lower needles brown off at some point. Do note however that pine will die indoors. I would recommend not keeping them indoors.

I am worried about putting it outside as in Scotland it gets very cold and killing it. Would it be wise to wait until spring to take it outside? And if so what would be the most suitable spot?

I grow JBP outside all year round outdoors in Sweden.

Dunno. Maybe the honour of helping Oscar out in early years of the site giving me something additional? Or one of the web development plugins on my machine? If I look at the source I normally have pictures if people indeed posted them

Are there no trees in the forests in Scotland? It’s a tree, not a human. Inside it will die, no doubt about it. You place it in a for a tree lethal environment and have fear to place it in its natural environment where it needs to be to survive….
Place it outside now. If temps drop to deep frost for prolonged times you can protect it a bit from freezing winds by placing it in a greenhouse or unheated garden shed, never inside your heated, dry , deadly living rooms.
