Is this ficus beyond saving?

I bought this tree for my mother, and after a few weeks it began losing a lot of leaves. She was keeping it on a table around 10 feet away from a window, and was watering it sparingly for fear of over watering.
She's given it to me to keep in my window under my grow lights since it's pretty gloomy here in the UK at the moment. I've been watering it generously and misting it daily. The rate at which it's dropping leaves has slowed but not stopped.
I'm a complete novice at this and I'm worried the roots may be dead already based on a bit of reading around.
Are the grow lights a bad idea?
Might I still not be watering it enough?
Is there anything more I can do for it?
Thanks in advance.

Ficusses lose leaves when moved to a new spot. And some leave los in winter is expected.
While the tree get less and less leaves, it needs less and less water.
I water my ficus in the south facing window every 3 days. (in the netherlands, same weather as u) Putting it in a dish of water for 10min, and then let it drain out.
The leaves in the picture are looking good. If you lets say a other 50% drops before the end of the winter, then in spring it will bounce back. And in summer put in outside.
The grow light is a good idea to give it some extra light.
Here a video what to expect in winter, start at 4min 30sec and watch to at least to 6min mark:

Thank you! That does seem to be what's happening, so that's very reassuring.
