What bonsai to buy for continental climate? was created by Oliver85

Hi guys,

I am new to the hobby and I want to buy a bonsai in the near future. I live in Europe, in Romania. The client is a typical continental climate with hot summers (up to 35-39 Celsius and cold winters up to -20 Celsius). I live in an apartment with a balcony pointed to the south with lots of light.

Initially I wanted to buy an "indoor bonsai" but after some reading I have found out that they still need to overwinter in a cool room with light and they will eventually die out without overwintering. I cannot provide such conditions inside, unfortunately. After some thought I have decided to buy an outdoor bonsai. Now, the main problem is the winter since it can get very cold for short periods of time. In order to offer some protection I am thinking of buying a mini unheated greenhouse to protect the tree from the wind and if necessary, to wrap the pot in greenhouse bubble wrap to protect it from the cold. Unfortunately I cannot provide the greenhouse with an electric heating system.

Now, regarding the type of tree, people recommended the Chinese elm (ulmus parvifolia) since it is resilient and good for a beginner. I also like the European olive (Olea sylvestris) and the Juniper. At my local bonsai shops, the only trees available are the Ficus gingseng and the Japanese elm (Zelkova).

My question is what type of tree would you recommend for the above mentioned condition? Will a sub-tropical bonsai like the elm survive the winter in such conditions? Is the Zelkova more hardy than the Chinese elm? Should I just order an olive or a juniper instead from Germany since they are more frost hardy?

Thank you!

99% of the zelkovas sold is actually misslabled chinese elms. My elm made 6 weeks of constant below -10 for six weeks with the coldest day at -16. -20 sounds harsh, but could work fine if it is just very short time.

Olives dont make it here without heating the coldest days.

I would go for juniper.

And....Best is to reach out to people growing bonsai in your area.
