Beginner bonsai owner here in the and in need of help because I am utterly lost of what is happening to my bonsai. For clarity, I am in the northeast US.

I bought a ginseng ficus bonsai about 4-5 weeks ago. Since I brought it home, it has been losing all of its younger leaves. These are the ones that are still a lighter green, smaller, and have just sprouted. Once in awhile, an older, darker leaf will fall off as well.

Sometimes the fallen leaves look perfectly fine and healthy, but other times they have browned or yellowed a bit. I am losing multiple leaves a day and I am worried that this is a premonition of the end for this beautiful tree.

I have only watered this plant once, and that was about 3 weeks ago. The soil is still lightly damp when I stick my finger in. This soil seems to hold onto water well, and I am worried that it has been slowly rotting the roots of this plant from beyond when I initially bought it. I also leave a pebble tray underneath.

As for sun, it gets a bright spot in front of a south facing window in a room with multiple south and east facing windows. Most days it gets a few hours of direct light, but even on cloudier days the room is always bright. I am also wondering if it is not receiving enough light. It sits semi-below the windowsill and the light may not be reaching the leaves underneath the top foliage. This would make sense as any direct light hits the top of the plant more than anything, and a lot of the smaller leaves are underneath.

I have no idea what is going on with this plant. I included images of my tree . There are photos of the leaves that have fallen, as well as the soil, trunk, and whole tree itself.

Edit: excuse the dust, it seems to attract a lot when I open my window. I take a light cloth to the leaves once every week or so to clean it up.
