When to start the chinese elm stratification process? was created by susannv

Hello! I am a newbie here, so if there's something obvious I'm missing, I'm sorry!
I want to grow a Chinese Elm indoors from seed, and I've read up on the whole stratification process, but I had one question that I couldn't find online. When do I start with this process? I read that the stratification time needed for a Chinese Elm is about 30-60 days. So if I start it now, I am worried the plant will need to leave the fridge during winter, and therefor catch less sunlight when it's growing in my windowsill. Should I wait, and put the seeds in the fridge around December, so I can put it in a pot on my windowsill somewhere in Februari/March?
Thank you in advance!

I can't help with the specifics of stratification, though the usual approach is to time it so you are putting the seeds out in spring..
However, it might be far easier to propogate a Chinese Elm from root cuttings or normal cuttings than messing around with seeds.
Also, if it stays indoors, it is likely to die off sooner or later.

Sow in a pot outside in fall. In spring the seeds will germinate by itself.
Isn't nature wonderfull!
