I mentioned the 4 year old assistant. Last February he found some apple seeds in (of all places) an apple. Look Granddad, apple seeds! We can grow some apple trees in a pot!

Two of them sprouted. By day before yesterday one of them was over a foot tall (1/3 meter), with one single trunk and a lot of leaves. In the storm yesterday it blew off the stand, hit the ground, and by the time I found it the leaves had all come off the top half. I suspect a rodent of some kine did that, but now I have a tree with the upper half of the seedling trunk with no leaves, it is September, and we have 6 weeks of growing season left. Usually leaves start coming off of trees in the third week of October, or maybe the fourth. Lately even later.

So, I can leave it as is, and see if more leaves come out, or cut the trunk off where the leaves top now.

If the tree puts out lots of leaves now, will they have time to contribute to the strength of the tree over winter, or would they detract? This is a tree physiology question I just don't know the answer to. Usually, seedlings take their chances, but there is this four year old involved.

Just leave it. Nature can sort a lot of things out by themselves. If the tree is completely green when first frost warnings come, do the bonsai dub-step. In the shed. Shed. Out the shed.
