I noticed a few branches on my Japanese maple have been growing black. There have also been leaves on some branches that are shriveling and browning. What could be some possible reasons for this? Are the two problems related?

Picture. Where are you keeping it? when are you watering? How big is it? Where are you?

Whoops sorry I don't know why the pictures didn't upload. This is a tree I received about 1-2 months ago. It is in Maryland zone 7a, and it's about 2-3 feet tall. I am keeping it in a place so it only receives direct sunlight for a few hours in the morning, and watering it whenever the soil is not very moist.

can't see much wrong with it, some die back and a few spots. Could do with more sun, but looks normal
