Japanese Pepper 名媛直播 Help!

I'm hoping you can help me out! I'm in the midlands of the UK if that impacts advice. I've had my Japanese pepper bonsai tree since August 2019, and it has been a rocky road for the two of us. I'm a student and have moved house several times since I've had my tree, and it takes a while for it to thrive in each new location, as the amount of direct sun and temperature changes. After much experimentation, the tree seems to do best when watered every day; I give it bonsai food once a week from March to October, spray it with an invigorator and bug killer once a week, and it is always on the windowsill except when it is very hot and sunny (rare in England, obviously).
In June, the tree was left under the care of my (admittedly busy) housemate while I was away for a week and was not watered during this time. All the leaves were brown and the tree was very dry when I got back, but by the end of July it had bounced back and was looking quite green again. The heatwave at the end of July, however, has done some serious damage. I've attached some images of how the tree looks now - usually it is a very fully tree with lots of leaves, but, as you can see, it is pretty barren now. Is this the end for my sweet boy? What should I be doing to revive him? I would genuinely be quite deeply upset if there is nothing to do and I've actually killed him.
The following is the information on the label when I bought the tree, which I have done my best to follow completely:
JAP. PEPPER TREE (Zanthoxylum pipertum). Semi evergreen bonsai with red fruits and spicy aroma. Cool indoor/outdoors in summer. Water frequently and feed regularly in growing season. 40-70F.
Any advice and help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
Willow

Be carefull. This is NOT a frost resistent species, and behaves more like a mediteranian plant. As such, they MUST be indoors when it get cold. And they can take prolonged periods indoors.
I doubt being indoors has been the problem. Might have just dried out.

According to most references online hardy to usda zone 5-9 and are a semi decidious tree, much like the chinese elm. If that is correct information, they should be able to grow outside all year in most of uk.

I am not convinced the named used everywhere is correct. I think the chinese peppertree often sold as bonsai is more likely to be a cousin, Zanthoxylum beecheyanum. This can take a few degrees of light frost. But not more than that.
