Saving three stumps! was created by Chilefornian

Hello Friends, I'm a newbie in this amazing art of 名媛直播. I have a couple of big questions, my neighbor cut several trees a while back and left the stumps to die (he doesn't live on the property) and he came yesterday he told me he will dig them out and throw them away. I asked him if I could take them (I rather try saving them) I've been researching about it and almost all I read is that the best time is late winter/early spring, unfortunately, I don't think I have that long (I asked if I could keep them there until then and he hasn't replied yet) An Oak, a Buckeye and a Madrone. Please help, first, can I do it now mid August in Woodacre, CA? what soil to use? etc. etc. The pictures I have are too heavy to add but the trees have trunks that are all around 6 inches in diameter. Thanks so much for your help!

Hello and welcome.

without a picture it is really hard/impossible to give good advice.
General: this is absolutely the wrong moment to dig up trees. Even more if they have just been cut down: and no leaves, and roots destroyed is an almost certain death sentence.
This being said, if they are to be dug up anyway, go for it. Take as much roots as you can, pot them up in good potting soil or back in the ground in your garden, and hope, thats all you can do.

I would wait. I could imagine that your neighbour would be happy to have someone else do the heavy lifting and could wait a few months. That would also give the stumps time to gather some more energy before going dormant.

Plant in coarse pumice after collecting and protect from sun & frost untill spring.

Thanks! the stumps have leaves, except the buckeye that gets eaten by deer. The trees were cut last fall and they healed the trunk. I spoke with him yesterday and he gave me till the end of the year to dig them out, which is great news for what you mentioned.

Attached are the new pictures I took ... thanks for your help and advice I really appreciate it.

Thanks so much! I spoke with him yesterday and he let me keep them there until the end of the year.

Should I plant them in big pots and let them be for a year or two at least? then move to a bonsai pot? I'm so lost. I'll keep researching

Please see the pictures on my other reply (dunno if I can post the same pictures over and over)

Thanks again!

The best thing to do is put them in the ground for a year or more while you decide what you want the trees to do. Next best would be to put them in sort of large garden pots for a year, again while deciding what the trees should do.

If they are big enough you can go directly to a cheap training pot, while they get used to being in a pot. In several years you can get real bonsai pots when you can tell from the tree the best size, shape, and color should be.

There is a wealth of advice in the How-To section of the website here.

I would lift them as the leaves begin to drop. Shake off most of the soil and plant in e.g., fine pumice / bims in a pot as small as fits the rootball. An overly large container does not help recovery, oddly enough.
