This past morning I was watering my plants and saw that something cracked one of two of my twin trunk dwarf Chinese elm. I don’t know what caused that. I’m thinking it was a mouse. Luckily my other plants were fine.

What’s the best way to deter pests such as mice or rats? I really don’t want to put my plants in a cage. That would alter the enjoyment.

There are a number of animal repellent chemicals at large box hardware stores. None of them worked for me, but they might deter mice. Squirrels may be scared off by statues of owls.

I got a coupon packages of bamboo skewers, cut them in half, and stuck them around the edges of the pots with pointed ends up and that seemed to work.

There are many feral cats in our neighborhood. They do seem to control some pest problems, but it's still not enough.

Would planting peppermint around my bonsais work?
