Hi,I have never tried to grow a Bonzai tree.This summer I got a little baby birch that started to grow in an empty balcony flower bed.I have re potted the little tree and am now wondering if it is possible to make it into a Bonzai?I have named "him" Groot.Look forward to information from someone who has the experience with Birch trees.

sure can. It is not the easiest species to make into a bonsai. But they are fast growing, which is nice if you are just starting out.

Do I need to trim it before winter, and do you know if I should leave it out over the winter?

No need for prunning at this point.

If silver birch is growing naturally around you, you can leave it outside in winter.

I live in Sweden, plenty of Birch around. I am just worried as "Groot" is in a pot.. Soil will freeze solid.
Is it better to put in the attic where it is more like a cold storage after he lose his leaves?

Yes, in Sweden. But I havent grown silver birch for bonsai yet. In my area they grow in small crevices in the natural rocks all around me. They seems to make it throe every winter despite most of the root ball is solid frozen for many weeks. If you are south of Stockholm you can most likelly keep it outside all year without protection.

No need to protect the tree. Your attic is hopefully far to dry and stagnant for a tree. If it is not, the solution is to fix the attic, not put trees there.
