Hi there

I bought a bonsai from a supermarket for about a tenner just under two and a half years ago. Looking at a photo I took of it when I first purchased it compared to as it is now, it is pretty leaf bare, I am aware that it is probably in dire need of repotting (I enclose a photo of its underside where there are a fair few roots coming out the pot), but thought that I'd first ask you guys as I am not sure if I'm better holding off until springtime next year? I'm sure that it will survive till then as it has clung on for a good while as is. I have also purchased all I think that I should need to replace the soil etc. Also, while I am here is anyone able to identify my tree? I am hoping that with some intervention my wee tree has a better life ahead of it.

P.S. I couldn't find anywhere on the site that let me know exactly what the different topic icons stood for, so apologies if sticking with the first one was the wrong shout.

It looks like a ficus of some kind and it might do OK with repotting now.

I would get a larger diameter, slightly shallower pot, some bonsai soil, cut all the roots off coming out of the bottom of the pot, pull it out of the pot, cut off enough more roots to get it into the new pot, put a layer of soil down, put the tree in, fill out the rest of the pot, water well, and put it outside in partial sun.

This will be sort of messy, so probably do it outside.
