名媛直播 identification for newbie - please help! was created by cuidobons

Hello everyone!

Thank you for taking the time to look at my post, I really hope you can help me. :cheer:

My girlfriend bought me a bonsai from Columbia road flower market last week and I am really struggling to identify it. I have tried to look myself, but I am new to this so it has been mainly guesswork :S . Ideally, I would like to know the specific species, so that I can learn more and treat it properly, please.

I have attached some pictures of it. As you can see the leaves have an opposite structure with slight raised bumps on each of them. I thought it may have been a portulacaria, but the leaves do not seem thick enough to me compared with the others that I have seen.

I look forward to your responses! Any help or advice would be really, really appreciated.

Thanks so much

Mark

P.S I know it looks like I have it resting in a pot of water, it isn't! Its just for when I do water it to catch the water until I get a better dish

Looks like you got yourself a fukien tea tree (carmona). That is the one tree that shows up most frequent in "help my tree is dieing" threads at this forum. Not one has come back with a success story. I am sorry to tell you, that tree got its death centence the day it left the nurcery.

Hello,
to me it looks very much like a Zantoxylum Piperitum (False Pepper Tree).

It's sold as an indoor bonsai but if you are in the northerm hemisphere take it outside now in a shaded area.
You will take it back inside in Autumn.

It is nowhere near a carmona. Ricky is right. chinese pepper, fake pepper.

Note, what you call leaves are not the leaves. This plant has compound leaves, so each set of small leaflets on one stalk makes one leaf.

Thank you both so much!

I have watched a few videos and looked it up on here and I think you two are exactly right with it being a Chinese pepper bonsai. I was very worried when I read the first reply, but all is good!

All the best and thanks again.
