Ficus bonsai is dying, please help :(( was created by katya

Hi!

I moved a few weeks ago and probably damaged my 3-year-old ficus bonsai in the process. The leaves are darkening and falling off, the roots look very unhealthy (see pic ), although it had unhealthy-looking roots for a while (it almost died a few times before)...

Some soil fell out during the move, bonsai doesn't sit sturdily in the soil. I thought about repotting it but read that during summer it can be dangerous. I gave the bonsai bonsai food a week ago but it just keeps getting worse.
I also put it in a very sunny place so it's getting enough light.

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!

I'm not an expert and I just bought a Ficus for the first time. All I can tell you from what I've read is that you shouldn't fertilize a bonsai that's sick. Also, it depens on where you live and the climate you have, if you live in a rather hot area (specially during the summer) it is advised that you give it direct sunlight during the mornings, but not during the afternoon/midday, since the sunlight can burn weaker leaves. In that case indirect sunlight during those hours would be better, make sure that the bonsai gets fresh air as well. Have you been watering when needed?
I may want to add that the bonsai not sitting sturily in the soil could be a sign of repotting but I get that during the summer it's not a great idea. I hope that your bonsai is able to recover :(

The tree has to have sunlight to survive. It might be able to struggle and barely live with only an hour or two through a window, but is won't do well.

It looks like maybe it was partially uprooted, which can cause a problem. See if you can get it back in the pot, roots covered with soil, and then water it well. Ficus likes water. Put it outside in partial sun, moving it to more and more sun as leaves come out. Move it back inside when winter temps get below 50F/10C.

My ficus, probably 23 years old, sits outside in full sun all summer long and loves it. I move it inside for the winter and it does not do well. Come March when it is warm again, back out and the new leaves burst out. It has to have sun.
