Are brown roots from conifers a sign of death? was created by Wes V.

I have a pixie dust dwarf Alberta spruce that I bought from a nursery last month. I repotted it in a terracotta container slightly larger than the nursery pot it was in. Lately I noticed the needles were browning and falling off. I wonder if it's from overwatering or excessive heat. Today I pulled it out of its pot and noticed the roots were brown instead of red. Normally conifer roots are red and look rubbery. I never trained the tree as a bonsai. Could it be dead?

Re potting in summer is not a good idea, put it back in the pot and do not take it out again. Disturbing the roots is doing more harm. Keep it watered but only water when almost dry. I would place it in shade in the heat of the day so that it does not dry out too quickly.
