Anyone know what causes the leaves to do this. To much to much water? Its a delonix regia (flame tree) in a premium bonsai soil in uk. The leaflests go yellow and get yellow bumps then drop. Shouldn't be fertaliser as I don't do it often because the leaves shrivel up and drop if I do (miracle grow fertaliser and bonsai focus have same effect) anyone have any pointers... also if it has anymore sun than I'm giving it the leaves close up so I'm at a bit of a stand still.

If you get a imediate bad reaction from fertilizer it has nothing to do with the brand. It is too much fertilizer for the tree to handle.

I was doing it in a small amounts becuase it's a small tree. It just wasn't happy with any fertaliser. But after I stopped fertilising the yellow lumps on leaflets would still happen. I'll get some pics up later on to show. Any idea what known to cause raised yellow lumps on the leaflets?

Greetings

I too have a flame tree and I'm growing it in the UK also, its got 3 branches and a 4th is growing also (this has come in a little yellow but I'm not too worried as the rest of the tree is looking healthy) I have only fertilised twice and I'm unable too say for sure if it is yellowing due too fertiliser or for some other reason (coming in yellow then as the shoot comes out it will match the colour of the others)

But regardless reaserch flame trees, they are tropical trees so they can handle temps much hotter than the UK so giving it sun won't / shouldn't effect it but for peace of minds sake maybe have it in the shade for a few hours before putting it back to catch the evening sun. Better yet let it get the morning sun since that will be less intense and move it at mid day into a shaded part until the heat cools down a bit then give it sunlight (but honestly it shouldn't effect it I'm no expert though).

If your soil drains very very well, watering on sunny days will be 3 times a day (stick your finger in/on the soil then rub your fingers if it's damp you can get away with not watering it for a few hours, if it's dry then water it until water comes out your drainage holes, another thing make sure the drainage holes are a decent size too small a hole will clump up the soil making it harder too drain, retain water and casue root rot, also if you have a tray under your tree too catch drainage water that's fine but personally I'd make sure there's little water in it as it could possible make the soil mould depending on what your using, make sure and give the leaves a little spray too if you like) another thing flame trees are common in Australia / africa (correct me if I'm wrong I'm just going from info odd the top of my head that I can remember reading) so they can handle a bit of a drought (this dosnt mean don't water it, but it does and should give you peace of mind knowing that if it dries a bit during the day when your away it will be relitivly OK.

As for fertiliser, I'm no expert but I belive you want to get a well balanced NPK fertiliser 10:5:10 for spring time (google the correct NPK and look at bonsai fertiliser too see what there balance is ect ect) also from what i assume soild fertiliser is more easier to use / have a more balance NPK, don't forget natural fertilisers too like chicken manure can be used also etc etc.

Size of pot matters too make sure it's not trying to grow in a tiny pot.

But maybe jist stop fertilising for a little while and see what it does, if it recovers then you have your awnser, if it dies then oh well grab some more seeds next spring and re plant with different soil etc etc, experiment with it.

Hopefully iv helped out a little and sorry for the piece of biblical scripture here haha

Thanks

Thank for that details reply. It does help. The watering 3 times a day I have never done. Maybe I'm under watering it. Normally every 4 or 5 days in the summery times we have had. What is the symptoms of a over water flame tree as I'll try increasing the water input and I'll know what signes to look for

Here are some pics. The yellow spots are the issue. I have you had them on your one and if so did you know what's causing it?

Hey again josh,

I'm really not a expert I have only just germinated my flame tree this year and gotten into the hobby maybe a week or so into March or April so my knowledge is limited, maybe check out other forums or just throw a quick Google search but as I said previously, be patient observe, experiment and use process of elimination, check-in on the plant feel the soil and learn to read what your tree needs it all sounds a bit airy fairy but I belive it's generally a good concept, hopefully your little tree is getting better and your learning also.

Let me know how it is progressing
