Hi everyone,
I'm really distraught, because my bonsai seems to be in really bad condition, and I have no idea what I can do about it.
A couple weeks ago the leaves on the top started to dry out, and a couple days ago when I randomly checked the roots I noticed that something really strange is growing on them. I tried to look online to find out what they are, but I couldn't find anything.
I would really appreciate if someone could tell me what is happening and if there is anything I can do about it.
Thank you!

These are nitrogen fixing nodules, in which bacteria live that take nitrogen from the air and convert it into a form available to the plant. It is how the podocarpus grows. The problem you have is that the plant is growing virtually without any substrate. You should be adding soil to the pot.
Do not do the whole bonsai repot with root trimming. Your plant is too weak. Just get more soil. Add a looselayer at the bottom of the pot. gently wiggly the tree into the soil. Ten fill from the top, teasing the soil between the roots as much as possible without damaging. THen water well.

Thank you very much for the help leatherback, I already went to the garden store and bought some bonsai soil and followed your instructions in adding the soil to the pot, I also removed all the dead and dying parts. I hope my bonsai will get better, will see.
