So I brought an Acer end of last summer, it survived the winter and in the future I have plans to make a bonsai from it.
Is there something that I can do now to start the process or just leave well alone for a couple of years?

Hello and welcome;
Yes, plant it in the ground and forget about it for 5-10 year. Dig it up every few years to do some root work and to chop it back hard.

There are many roads to growing bonsai. You can grow it from the plant you have now, slowly. pruning every 1-2 years every year a little larger, whil in a largish pot. I am doing this with a few. Or you can plant in the ground, being carefull to direct growth over the years.
The latter will get you a BIG tree faster. But with some downsides (Large pruning scars, oversized roots).
