Hello,I just finished the basic course and will get started on styling my little juniper bonsai this weekend. I just have a couple of questions I was hoping someone could help me with:1)My wife bought me this little juniper bonsai two weeks ago and repotted it in regular flower potting soil before giving it to me. Her intention was lovely, but it sounds as though the soil is not the most adequate for a bonsai. I purchased bonsai soil and was wondering if you would recommend reporting it immediately after styling or waiting a little while. 2)my juniper is currently outdoors in an area that gets direct sun until about mid day and is shaded for the rest of the day. Does this location sound adequate for a Juniper?3) we live in the Northeast United States and get quite a bit of snow. Obviously that’s not a problem now, but I am wondering what I should do over the winter months. Could I place the bonsai on a porch where it will be protected from snow and frost but still remain outdoors? Or should I have it indoors instead? Temperature is around here can get to about -18 Celsius sometimesThank you very much for your assistance!Rodrigo

The soil is not so much an issue, as is how you water it. Make sure you allow the plant to use the water in the soil for 90% before watering again. It being organic means there is always the risk of soggy soil for a long period of time.

In warm summer less an issue than in fall winter. As such, moving it on a porch might be an idea, if only to control the rain untill you can repot next spring.

-18 is not realy an issue if this plant is protected agains suna nd wind when frozen.

The pot is a tad large for the plant.

What do you want to style?

Now is not the time for any styling or repotting of junipers in your area. Let grow wild until late winter or early spring. Let it rest for a year and repot next late winter or early spring.

I was thinking of styling it as a Fukinagashi, I would love to hear your suggestions. I did notice that the current soil stays wet for a while, and so far I have only had to water it every two - three days. I don’t have any experience with this, so for now I’m just following the recommendations on the course to stick my finger about 1 cm deep into the soil to feel the level of moisture. I am adding water any time it “feel“ driest to me, although that is highly subjective.
The pot is definitely big, but it was what it came into. I would love to replace it with something smaller and more harmonious with this kind of plant. So judging by what I heard so far, it sounds like I should just be careful with the amount of watering and protected from wind and snow in the winter, waiting until mid winter or early spring to style, wire and re-pot. Is that correct? I was really hoping to have some fun with this now, but really don’t wanna hurt the plant. Maybe I should just buy another one, perhaps a little bit bigger to practice the skills I am learning? Thanks !
