Hello everyone.
I have wanted a bonsai ever since I was a child, but never succeeded in growing from those little kits you used to be able to buy back in the late 90’s.
Role on 20 ears later and I have been given, what I would call a medium to large bonsai. The previous owner said he had neglected it for the last two years dude to personal health reasons , but it is still growing. I have a full kit to go with it with cutters and trimmers, things for bending etc.
I’m really excited to start looking after this bonsai. I have been researching and watching videos, but I would like some advice on where to actually start with this particular tree. I was told it was a beech. I was told to pinch back 2 leaves?? But not 100 % sure what that means. I would love for someone to be able to give me some starting advice of what to do. I have attached pictures for reference.
I also got given a box tree as well... I think that’s what it’s called.

First think tree not bonsai, that is what it is first. From the look of it it probably will need some pruning this year, not pinching. Once the leaves have opened and hardened off or set, then the extensions can be pruned back It is difficult to see from the pictures, but it looks to be a bit elongated and will need pruning harder later in the autumn not now. Keep it watered and add some fertiliser and see how it is growing. Buy a book and read how this species grows and responds to pruning etc.

I would say its a hornbeam.
If the soil is compact, meaning the water is not being soaked up well enough, try to loosen it a bit with an chopstick, but without damaging the roots.
