I have 3 nice cottonwoods in pots and am trying to find inspiration / information on them for bonsai and it seems like they are non existent. I have even looked on this forum and nothing seems to pop up. Does anyone have any tips for these?

If you can't find examples, then find some pictures of full grown tree's. And then try to replicate that in a smaller proportions.

I have actually read the first but not the second.
We have plenty of cottonwoods around me that I have begun to look at and decide how to miniaturize them. I was just interested in seeing if anyone else has tried it out and some pitfalls they have had. I seem to keep picking the fringe bonsai, maybe I need to just get some classic maples, or junipers hah

I think you are doing the right thing looking for local materials. And rorrors comment on going out and look at mature trees around you is spot on. All the inspiration you need at your door step.
