I have found some amazing trunked lilacs that I have gotten in pots and are doing well. My question is they were under a large tree so they do not have any branches for a few feet. If I cut this down to about a foot or so will there by new shoots next spring? I am worried that there will not be any new growth if I cut it down that much. Basically what I am wondering is if I cut at the red lines will this bud back below it so I can start to shape it later on? Does anyone know about this? Thank you!

Yes it will, once the tree has had a good season of growth.
Buuuut.. Then branches will also sprout fro the trunk by itself.

So how would you go about pruning this? The trunks are pretty decent but they are just too tall. I want to bring them down to about 24-36 inches. I am just afraid to chop it all off but I see no other way to promote branch growth lower down. Do you know of any ways?

get it growing strongly first. Then in fall cut back.
