Hello friends,

Today (May 20) I picked up a Sakuragata Satsuki azalea and I really need help styling it. I need help determining where and when to make cuts as well as when I should put it into a bonsai pot. Someone suggested a clump style, but I don’t know how to achieve such a thing. Could you guys help me please?

Thanks in advance.

I never take any styling decitions until after at least one full growing season has passed in my care and the tree is vigorous. All I do until then is looking at the tree in all directions 100s of times.

From your photo it sure looks like a natural clump style material. But study it in real life from all direction for a year might reveal something else? Maybe the left branch on picture 2 is a good start for an informal upright? Hard to tell from a photo anyway.

For me all styles the process is the same. First styling is allways root work, Identify the style to aim for, cut of everything that dont support that style. Regrow if needed and repeat. Once the basic structure is there start on ramification.

Topfrog is right.

Here's an idea. Take a couple of pictures from different angles. Print them out, maybe two or three copies,,put them on ywall and mark some branches to cut off, a different couple in each picture. Maybe wait a couple of months before marking the design ideas. Every now and then tear one up.

The winner is the one still there next spring.
