I took some baby lilacs from around a massive lilac. I have them in pots in the shade. My question is some are 1-2 inch think and about 6 foot tall. should I just cut this back very low to push new growth or keep all the branches/ leaves? Please help I would love to save these!

Cutting them down as small seadlings will not benefit the tree or your bonsai endavours. Just let them grow freely until you reached 80% or so on the trunk thickness you need for the final design.

Yes good idea. I just didn’t know since there was a small rootball and such a large plant if cutting it back would allow for a higher chance of success. I thought I heard if you cut them back to about a foot it won’t need to produce so much energy for all the branches and leaves

It is the leafs that produce the energy. The process is called photosyntesis. Less foliage means less energy.

If you have lilacs of 2 inch diameter, you have decent sized plants. Cutting low is the wat to go, eventually. How many roots did you get with them? If the leaves are not wilting on you, I would leave the plant for now, and cut later in the year. Let it establish in the pot first.
