Hi all, I am new to bonsai as my mother gifted me one for mother's day. She had had it for a while, not sure how long probably a few months. She bought it in a round pot and repotted it into a square pot for bonsai but she used just regular old dirt from beside her barn. I've only had it a day but there's a small mushroom growing out of the dirt on one side. I was able to find a bonsai soil premixed at a nursery today, but I still need to get wire after watching several YouTube videos and reading. But I wonder if I should repot it now asap or wait until it's not spring/summer? I really like the tree and don't want to kill it!

What species is it? Can you post a picture?
Generally it is best not to work on a new tree the first year. That gives the tree time to get used to your conditions and you will have plenty of time to make up a long term plan for the tree.

Ficus microcarpa ginseng. One small leafed ficus grafted on the bulbous trunk of another big leafed ficus. By most people in the hobby not concidered to be a bonsai.
The only thing I know for sure about this plant is to look out for big leafed branches and cut short as soon as possible.
