Hello everyone,

I have few questions about repotting chinese elm - is it possible to do it also during summer time? I wanted to repot it to the terrarium where are no vents but I?m not sure if it is OK due to roots... Is here somebody who has got some experiences with it? Or with other species which are suitable for beginners?

Do you know how big the terrarium should be and is it necessary to repot elm every second one year or not?

And what temperature should be in the room? I would like to put it to my bedroom where is 17 degrees during winter and up to 25 degrees during summer.

Will be glad about any advices or recommendations!

Thank you!

I dont think any tree will do good in a terrarium without vents. Trees are adapted to outside where air is constantly changed.

Your winter temperature sounds high for chinese elm. They need winter dormancy to thrive. They also enjoy different day night temperature.

Why do you want to grow a tree in terrarium?

Ok so is there another tree which could be in these conditions? Because I see some bonsai in small jars so I was inspired that idea and wanted to do something simillar but in bigger size so terrarium looked like good solution.

I live in Poland and some people do it in this way...

You want to attempt something very unusual and complicated. No one here has attempted and succeded as far as I know.

If you are devoted to terrarium growing and dont think growing trees outdoors where they belong is an option your best chanse is proboably tropic species. Maybe ficus? I have seen ficus benjamina doing ok in reptile enclosures. But dont expect your tree to thrive. And really, in order to make a good bonsai the tree needs to thrive.

Or grow tropical orchids instead, much easier
