My bonsai has a hole in it's stem near the roots - do I fill/cover it or not was created by zoejane32xx

Hey everyone

New to this forum, really appreciate any replies in advance. I've had a ficus bonsai for about 6 months now and all has been well. I recently repotted it to a larger pot and it seemed to be really happy, healthy and growing lots during the spring so far.

Today I was looking at it and saw a tiny plant growing from the base of the bonsai trunk. I looked closer and as I touched it the outer layer came off and revealed a hole. I did a lot of research on what to do today but found varying advice: some people say to fill/cover it and others say to leave it alone. I checked the hole and it doesn't seem to be soft or very deep inside. The rest of the tree is healthy and growing normally, no signs of over/under watering.

Any advice on what to do here? Is covering the hole with duct tape a terrible idea?

DO NOT cover the hole with duct tape!!!! Leave it alone. The pot this plant is in is huge for the size of the plant, and the soil does not look good, it also appears as if you have inside, that is not good. Chinese Elms are totally hardy, and do not do well unless they are in the open wit sunshine.

Thank you for your advice. I thought I was doing the right thing by repotting it in a larger pot as it was root bound. But I guess it was too big. Should I put it back in its old pot that's smaller? Outside for me right now is very very cold... I would worry about it throughout the night in near freezing conditions. Would it be ok out there?

Thanks again for the advice :)

As I said the species it hardy and will easily withstand -10C. I think it would be better to leave it now, unless you have only just re potted. The idea of re potting is to go back into the same size pot having pruned the roots.

What seems very, very cold to us might just be fine spring weather to the tree. We had lows around 66F/20C week before last and then lows of 36/2 last week. The trees all did fine.

Trees that havent been hardened off in authum and experience frost in spring can get some damage. Not life threating for an elm, but better protect. Close to freezing is not a problem.

I didn't know this! I think I baby my plants too much and like to keep them inside where it's warm. I will be returning the bonsai to it's smaller pot and putting it outside tomorrow.

Thank you for the advice, this is an amazingly helpful forum!

Interesting stuff that I didn't know, so thank you. I always worry about them getting too cold but I will be putting the bonsai outside tomorrow. Thanks again for the advice, me and my bonsai appreciate it greatly :)

Okay, good to know and really appreciate the advice. I thought I'd try and put it back in the old pot where I literally just repotted it and it doesn't seem to be liking it in there. I am learning a lot and I always thought repotting was to give it a bigger pot to spread the roots more. I think I majorly messed up ha. But thank you again and I will take this into consideration!

A small pot is a design feature and not a particular benefit to the tree. I would not stress the tree any more and just leave it in the current pot. If you want smaller pot you can always repot again in a few years. Now it is plant health first, Everything else is less important.
