Was at a local nursery getting some herbs and picked up this little guy. Now my question is where to start? I did some reading up on the species and care, but would I bother the tree now outside of general care? Otherwise I am excited to start!

Cute little tree.
these are my suggestions : Perhaps put it in a smaller bonsai pot and remove the pebbles and unnecessary material on the top soil (It would be more attractive with a thin layer of akadama on the surface)
Remove the blue tag.
cut away any branches on the trunk that are coming towards you, wire the branches down to make it seem more mature.
Water it everyday, with moderation.
people will have different suggestions but this is mine!
cheers

Except for watering and fertilising I wouldn’t do anything. Most people that start are way to eager to “do” things and do too much on the wrong moment and end up with a dead tree because of that.
Just try and keep it alive for a year or so. That will give you the chance to get to know the tree, get to know it’s “ habits”, gives you the chance to look at it a thousand times, to look at a lot of other established bonsai, study some horticulture ( thé main knowledge when doing bonsai), study some general bonsai techniques and the moment in the year they are supposed to be executed, etc etc
